Skin cancer is a common malignancy, particularly in sunny climates such as Florida. Eyelid skin cancers are most prevalent on the lower eyelid, but may be found anywhere on the eyelid margin, corners of the eyelid, eyebrow skin or adjacent area of the face.
Skin cancers involving the eyelid usually appear as a painless elevation or nodule. The smooth eyelid margin may be distorted. The eyelashes may be misdirected or missing in places. Ulceration, bleeding or crusting may be present.
Excessive exposure to sunlight is the single most important factor associated with skin cancers on the face, eyelids and arms. Others factors such as skin color, heredity, exposure to chemical carcinogens or ionizing radiation may predispose one to developing skin cancer.

Any suspicious growths in the eyelid area require biopsy. Basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas are the most common. Treatment involves complete surgical excision of the skin cancer and reconstruction of the defect.
