PRK

An excimer laser is used to sculpt an area 6 to 9 millimeters in diameter on the surface of the eye. The corneal epithelium, or skin of the eye, is first removed completely. Without burning or cutting, the laser's ultraviolet light pulses are then applied to reshape the cornea. The corneal epithelium then grows back naturally over the next 3 to 7 days. A bandage contact lens is worn during this healing time to minimize discomfort that may be associated with the procedure. Functional vision typically returns within the first week.

The major benefit of this procedure is that the integrity and the strength of the corneal dome are retained. From a patient’s perspective, some possible disadvantages over LASIK or LASEK may include:
  • Longer healing time
  • Longer use of medications
  • More initial discomfort
Serious complications with PRK are extremely rare. Infection is the most worrisome complication and fortunately, it can usually be eliminated with antibiotic medications. Other possible problems include:
  • Delayed surface healing
  • Corneal haze and/or scarring
  • Over or under correction
  • Night vision difficulties
